Vaccines work by lining up with the window when a puppy’s inherited “maternal” immunity fades. That is why the series repeats every few weeks and why the final core dose must land at 16 weeks or older to be reliable. Here is the AAHA-based schedule the generator uses.

Core vs. non-core (lifestyle) vaccines

Core vaccines are recommended for every dog: DHPP and Rabies, plus Leptospirosis, which AAHA reclassified as core in its 2024 update (some clinics still offer Lepto based on lifestyle, so confirm it with your vet). Non-core (lifestyle) vaccines depend on where your dog goes and what it is exposed to, not its breed:

VaccineWho needs itSchedule
BordetellaBoarding, daycare, grooming, dog parks, classes1 dose (intranasal/oral) or 2 doses (injectable), then yearly
Canine InfluenzaSame social/high-density settings; outbreak areas2 doses 2–4 wks apart, then yearly
LymeTick-heavy or wooded regions; outdoor/hunting dogs2 doses 2–4 wks apart, then yearly

Rabies is set by law. Your state or local government decides the exact rabies timing and whether a 1-year or 3-year product is used. Your vet follows that law, so treat the rabies date here as a typical guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does the vaccination schedule depend on breed?
No. The core puppy vaccination schedule is age-based and identical for every breed and size, because the vaccine dose is not scaled to body weight the way medications are. What varies between dogs is the non-core (lifestyle) vaccines, which depend on exposure and geography, not breed.
When do puppies get their shots?
Core DHPP starts at 6–8 weeks and repeats every 2–4 weeks until at least 16 weeks of age (usually three doses). Rabies is given once at 12–16 weeks. Leptospirosis, now core in AAHA’s latest guidance, is given at about 12 and 16 weeks. Boosters follow at around one year.
Why does the last shot have to be at 16 weeks?
Puppies carry temporary immunity from their mother that can block a vaccine from “taking.” That protection usually fades by about 16 weeks, so the final core dose is given then to make sure the puppy builds its own lasting immunity.
Can my puppy go outside before finishing its shots?
Start socialization early — the key window closes around 12–14 weeks, so don’t wait for the last shot. Once your puppy has had its first vaccine set at least a week earlier, you can safely socialize in controlled, low-risk settings (clean spaces, known healthy dogs), while avoiding unknown dogs and high-traffic areas until the core series is complete. Ask your vet what is safe in your area.

This schedule is a general guide based on the AAHA Canine Vaccination Guidelines and is not veterinary advice. Your veterinarian sets the final plan based on your puppy’s health, your region, and local rabies law, and may adjust timing or add or remove vaccines. Always confirm your puppy’s schedule with your vet.
